An initial provincial reported stated that the Compostela Valley landslide this 2012 happened around 3:00am at a small scale mining site in Sitio Diat I and Diat II in Barangay Napnapan in Pantukan town.
National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) head Benito Ramos said that heavy rains and a small quake were the possible causes of the landslide. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology had recorded a magnitude-3.0 quake at 12:01 a.m. Thursday, with the epicenter traced to 121 km southeast of Mati, Davao Oriental.
In April 2011, a landslide also occurred in Pantukan, Compostela Valley, killing more than a dozen people involved in gold mining. Provincial government then issued a ban on residential construction near the small-scale mining areas but residents were stubborn to stay.
“Since Dec. 16 may advisory tayo sa lahat na minahan to vacate the area. Some people are really hardheaded and sneaked back despite our warnings”, said Compostela Valley Governor Arthur Uy.
We just hope that the tragedies like these Compostela Valley landslide 2012 won’t happen again.
