Chief Justice Renato Corona was in fighting form as he delivered a speechbefore the Supreme Court hours before the start of his impeachment trial.

About 3,000 court officials and employees wearing black gathered at the High Court Monday to hear a mass and Chief Justice Corona’s speech.
CJ Corona’s speech was sort of a testimony in defense, live in national TV.
In his speech, Corona lashed out at the president, a vice presidential candidate who lost in elections and somebody who wants to be chief justice. He didn’t give names, but clearly he was alluding to Mar Roxas and Justice Antonio Carpio as wanting him out because of their own interests.
Corona also said that he only have 5 properties, instead of the alleged 45.

Miriam files leave of absence
In related news, Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago filed a leave of absence from the Senate at the start of impeachment trial. In his letter to Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile, she cited hypertension as the reason why she would be absent from her duties.
