The official logo of World Youth Day Rio 2013 will be launched on February 1st. The news was given first hand by the coordinator of the Youth Sector in the Archdiocese of Rio, Father Renato Martins, during the Vigil Mass that opened the Youth Worship on the night of January 13th.
The celebration was presided over by the Archbishop of Rio, Dom Orani John Tempesta. The vigil, offered as an opportunity for spiritual preparation for WYD, is held on the second Friday of each month at the National Shrine of Perpetual Adoration in the Church of St. Anne in downtown Rio de Janeiro.
Young people packed the church to remain with the Blessed Sacrament all night in prayer for WYD. For this time of Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, vigil participants also venerated the pilgrim image of St. Sebastian (patron saint of the Archdiocese and the city of Rio de Janeiro) as part of the trecenacelebrations honoring the three days prior to his saint’s day. The theme of this year’s trecena is: “St. Sebastian, a young disciple of Jesus Christ.”
During the Mass, Archbishop Orani noted that prayer is what sustains all the work of preparing for WYD. “May this Day bring youth to reaffirm its path towards holiness,” said the Archbishop.
Dom Orani reminded those in attendance that we are all sent on a mission, and that we should go out tomeet each other and bring one another to Christ. We all, especially young people, are called to live a new way to make a difference in society, to reinforce our culture with Christ’s strength.
The evening’s performers were the band “Frutos de Medjugorje,” with some singing by the “Missionary of the New Song,” Ricardo Sá.
